SCIENCE Week of Aug. 29 - Sept. 2

The Scientific Method
This week, students will be using class time to write a paper about The Scientific Method. Pages 20 & 21 in textbook will be the basis for their paper. The students must define the five steps of The Scientific Method and give examples from one of the "investigations" we completed in class last week (balloon investigation or paper airplane investigation or paper helicopter investigation). This paper may be hand written (or typed from home computer). The Scientific Method paper is due Friday, Sept. 2.

LANGUAGE ARTS Week of Aug. 29 - Sept. 2

Grammar This week's lessons include: nouns, plural nouns, common & proper nouns, capitalization, singular & possessive nouns.

Grammar assignments are completed in class.

READING Week of Aug. 29 - Sept. 2

"Animal Reading Contract" 
Two Vocabulary assignments are due this Friday, Sept. 2. (Vocabulary words are listed on page one of the contract.) Students may complete any parts of the contract ahead of due dates.

"Walk Two Moons"
Chapter 1-11 Vocabulary Quiz on Monday, Aug. 29.
Students need to read chapters 12-18 by Friday, Sept. 2.
New vocabulary words will be given for chapters 12-18.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS due on Thursday, Sept. 1.

SPELLING Week of Aug. 29 - Sept. 2

This week in Spelling the students will study about words ending in "est", "al" and "ly", plus, they will learn about the "Doubling Rule". Students complete spelling lesson practice in class. They should use their lessons to study for Friday's test.

SCIENCE (All 5th grade classes) August 22-26

INQUIRY SKILLS and THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

This week, students will complete 'investigations' and use their Science Journals to log their results. Science Journals are graded each week. Look for a grade summary sheet in their Friday Folder.

LANGUAGE ARTS August 22-26

SPEAK-UPS The students will be assigned to do a "Speak-Up" about My Summer Vacation. They will answer questions about their Summer and orally present their information on Tues., Aug. 23 and Wed. Aug. 24. The oral presentation doesn't need to memorized. They may use their worksheet.

GRAMMAR Punctuation and Grammar Rules Reviewed. Pages 10-13 will be worked on this week in class.

READING August 22-26

Animal Reading Contract On Monday, Aug. 22, students will be given the Animal Reading Contract packet. Look for it in the reading section of their binder. The first due date is this Friday, Aug. 26; students need to choose an "Animal" book to read.

Walk Two Moons Our class will begin reading this book together in class. Chapters 1-11 should be read by Monday, Aug. 29. Vocabulary words will be given to the students on Tuesday, Aug. 23.  They will define these words in class and study for VOCAB QUIZ on Monday, Aug. 29.

SPELLING August 22-26

Spelling Workbooks should be here soon. In the meantime, the students will be given photo-copied spelling pages for this week's lessons #6- #9. We will  complete these pages in class.

SCIENCE (all 5th graders) Aug 15-19

Tuesday, August 16, will be our first day meeting for Science class. A pre-test will be given that day.

This week the students will have lessons on:
* Following directions
* Observation / Inference

All lesson activities will be completed in class.

HOMEWORK: none

LANGUAGE ARTS August 15-19

This week the students will complete a Writing pre-test.

The students will have lessons on:
*Sentences and sentence fragments
*Declarative and interrogative sentences
*Imperative and exclamatory sentences
*Compound sentences

Since we are waiting to assign lockers (shelving on back order), the students won't be assigned a Language Arts book at this time. Assignments will be completed in class.

HOMEWORK: none

READING August 15-19

This week the students will take a Reading pre-test.

The students will learn how to set-up a "Story Plot Line" (as shown in the 5th Grade letter that was sent home). This will be completed in class using short stories.

HOMEWORK: None this week. "Story Plot Line" activities completed in class.

SPELLING Aug 15-19

We will complete Lessons 1-4 together in class this week.

First day organizing 'jobs'

* Label subject sections in your binder. See 5th grade schedule with 'starred' subjects.

* Return 5th grade information letter "signature slip" (letter handed out at Thursday's Meet and Greet and, also, handed out the first day of school.)

The above jobs are due by Monday, August 15th.

Welcome to 5th grade at Academy of Tucson!

Our first day of school is Thursday, August 11. We start at 8:15 prompt and have an early release at 12:05. Be sure to bring along your school supplies (list was mailed out over the summer).

Friday, August 12 is also an early release day at 12:05.

There will be a lot of hand-outs given to the students these first two days of school.

Here's to a GREAT YEAR!!!
