SCIENCE Sept. 26-30

The Circulatory System: Students will use their study guide to complete activities, notes, and study for QUIZ on Tuesday.


The Respiratory System: Students will investigate and study the workings of the the Respiratory System on Wednesday.


Skeletal and Muscular Systems: Students will be given study guides listing the major bones and muscles. Study the highlighted parts for next week's QUIZ.


The 5th Grade class will be creating a Human Body Model once we complete our unit. Students are encouraged to collect recyclable items that could be used for our Human Body Model. Save these items at home until an announcement is given to bring them in for construction. Thank you!

LANGUAGE ARTS Sept. 26-30

Students will be writing a Personal Narrative this week. Students will "Pre-write", "Create a Rough Draft", "Peer Tutor Revision", "Write a Final Copy".

"Reading Contract- Biography"
New Reading Contract packet was given to students on Monday, Sept. 19th. They chose a biography to read. Start reading biography now. Vocabulary assignment due this week.



"The Lady or The Tiger" This short story will be read in class this week.  
Questions #1-#4 are due Wednesday.
Students will prepare for a "The Lady or The Tiger" debate to be held on Thursday and Friday (if needed).

SPELLING Sept. 26-30

This week the students will use "Plural Variations", identify "Morphographs"; plus, they will learn about "Vowel Patterns". Students complete spelling lessons #31-#34 in class.  They should use their lessons to study for Friday's test on Sept. 30th.

SCIENCE Sept. 19-23

Digestive System TEST on Wed., Sept. 21

Monday and Tuesday, students will be reviewing the Digestive System and completing Science Journal work in preparation for the test. Students should know the names of the major organs of the Digestive System (worksheet).

Thursday, we begin our study of the Circulatory System (pages 48, 49).

Friday, the students will conduct a "Reaction Time" investigation. Worksheet packet must be completed and turned in on Monday, Sept. 26.

LANGUAGE ARTS Sept. 19-23

Scholastic Books Orders were sent home with students on Monday, Sept. 12th. Orders are DUE back by Wednesday, Sept. 21 (information is included about how to place your order online. Our class is able to receive a free book for the classroom library for online orders.)


Monday, Sept. 19, we will be going over the requirements for the new "Reading Contract - Biography" (See READING).

New Reading Contract packet will be given to students on Monday, Sept. 19th. They are to choose a biography to read. The signature sheet needs to be signed by parent and student plus activities chosen; DUE: Friday, Sept. 23.

"Walk Two Moons"
Students need to complete the book this week. We will be doing oral reading in class. Students should be familiar with the main events in the book and be prepared for a TEST next week.

Plant Cell and Animal Cell QUIZ on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

We begin our study of the 'systems' of the body. This week we begin with the Digestive System. Students will take notes and draw diagrams in their Science Journals.  On Thursday, the students will have an "investigation" of the digestive system using pantyhose and balloons. (Be sure to ask them about this!) Science activities are completed in class and graded (information from pages 24-29 in the student textbook).

LANGUAGE ARTS Sept. 12-16

This week in Language Arts the students will be:

* creating a comic strip (p. 21) on Monday
* writing a poem (p. 23) on Tuesday
* writing a "journal entry" (p. 25) on Wednesday
* orally presenting "Collections" on Thursday
* completing pages 26-29:1-5 in class on Friday

This week in Spelling the students will study about words with prefixes  "ex' and "pro" plus, they will learn about the suffix "ion". Students complete spelling lessons #21-#24 in class.  They should use their lessons to study for Friday's test on Sept. 16th.

SCIENCE Sept. 6-9

We begin our Unit on the Human Body with a study of Cells.
Plant cells will be compared with Animal cells.
(pages 32-34 in the textbook)
Students will diagram both types of cells and create a Venn Diagram.
This is for preparation of the Cell Test on Tuesday, Sept. 13 (a presentation by TPD : anti-bullying message : has been scheduled for Monday.)

LANGUAGE ARTS Sept. 6-9

This week the students will learn about Sept. 11, 2001. They need to interview an adult about that day:
1. What were you doing when you heard the news about the Twin Towers?
2. How did you react?
3. How have you 'come to grips' with this attack?
Interview is DUE: Friday, Sept. 9

Students will interpret Political Cartoons from Sept. 11th and compare other historical events to Sept. 11th.

READING Sept. 6-9

"Animal Reading Contract" 
Writing assignment is due this Friday, Sept. 9.  Students may complete any parts of the contract ahead of due dates.
